Bananas

I absolutely love bananas. They are nutritious and delicious and I have been known to eat one every day. Not any more! I don't know about other States, but they are now an absolute luxury in Tasmania ($12.98 a kilo!!!). I bought two today, one large and one small, and they cost over $4!!!!!!!!! Cyclone Larry has a lot to answer for! How much are bananas in your State? Are the supermarkets really showing the true picture? Is the shortage that bad, or are they just cashing in??

My brother in law was visiting this weekend (from Melbourne) and he reports the same prices. I drove past a fruit shop here on the weekend advertising them for 79cents a kg!! What a difference!

It is definitely a case of the shops cashing in - a lot of the bananas on the Gold Coast actually come from northern NSW which definitely wasn't affected by Larry but the prices in our shops are also $11-$12/kg. Much as I enjoy bananas - I just can't bring myself to pay that price for them. Hope you enjoy the two that you bought.

Melb is the same Suzy. $13 a kilo. I buy a couple a week because Josh and I both love them (especially on crumpets) but they are such a luxury at the moment. It will be interesting if the price does come down in November when the crops from Cyclone Larry are meant to recover by.

$11.98 per kilo here in Melbourne. The supermarket that I shop in has only just started stocking them again. And they only had the lady finger ones, which I don't particularly like, so another week for me without bananas too :0(

Same price here - A chat with my local greengrocer (I refuse to buy fruit & veg at supermarkets) and he tells me that by October we should start easing up on the banana problems. It just can't be close enough.

I refuse to buy them because they are way too expensive. I can manage without them :)

Me too and yes, I caved into buying them because I HAVE to have them on my porridge in the morning. I reckon they're exploiting the situation for sure!

Nice and cheap here in NZ (they're all imported from the islands). Green veges are double their normal price though, 'cause of all the cold, wet weather.

They were $13.99 at Coles here in Bendigo over the weekend - I looked at them and thought "nah!". Brought some apples and a punnet of strawberries instead. Definitely more bang for my buck!

I paid up to $10 a kilo for them, then the place I got them followed the others and put them up to $12 a kilo I thought fine, stuff ya, and whenever I go there I see them going black and rotten, what a freakin' waste!

The supermarkets are cashing in. The growers get a set amount per box so sometimes they are in profit and sometimes they are in debt, its all very up and down.

I'm fed up with the rent prices for housing here in Perth too. Real crapholes are commanding $250 a week, mortgages and to buy a house are ridiculous. Where will it end?

Bananas are a ridiculous price.

I like banana cake but not that much.

Oh my Lord! I know in NZ they are still really cheap, but apparently ours are sourced from a different place from yours (Phillipines maybe) so they werent affected! Crazy though!

I totally agree!! I am craving banana's at the moment during this pregnancy and in sydney they are also $12.98/kg. I bought a bunch last week and it cost me $16.00!!!

I am not buying them either at the moment. The boys have had to learn to like strawberries, and watermelon, and they have started eating oranges so perhaps it isn't all bad. Unfortunately I have been craving banana's for the last couple of weeks so give in by buying custards. It's probably not as good for me is it LOL.

Hope you are having a lovely week Suzy. :D
